Research of bioaccumulation of Pb and Cr in vertical biofiltration systems with bacterial inoculum derived from aquatic sediments South Denpasar aims to get the best sediment sources that can be used as an active suspension to process metals Pb and Cr dissolved. Sediment samples taken from some waters are ecosystems Mangrove Statue Ngurah Rai Tuban, Benoa Harbour and Estuary Dam Suwung. Each sediment samples were grown in a liquid medium to get the best active suspension, which was determined by an increase in biomass ( VSS ) and the speed of growth. Best active suspension is used as inoculum in the vertical biofilters to decreaseconcentration of Pb and Cr dissolved. Ability of vertical biofilter is determined by their effectiveness in lowering levels of Pb and Cr and capacity of the system used. The results showed that the vertical biofiltration system capable of lowering the concentration of Pb and Cr to each concentration became 0.1680 ppm and 0.1460 ppm within 6 hours of treatment with initial concentration of 2 ppm respectively. The results showed that the vertical biofiltration system capable of decreasing the concentration of Pb and Cr became 0.1680 ppm and 0.1460 ppm within 6 hours of treatment with initial concentration of 2 ppm respectively. This concentration has been below the qualitystandard (PerGub Bali No.8 Tahun 2007). The highest effectiveness of vertical biofilters system against Pb and Cr occurred while processing time of 24 hours with the respective value amounted to 99.49 % and 99.41 %. While the value of biofiltration capacity in lowering the concentration of Pb and Cr amounting 4,3188x10-3 mg/g and 4,5369x10-3 mg/g. In microbiological tests, one type of bacteria that play a role in the process of bioaccumulation of Pb and Cr is Bacillus sp in the amount of 20 CFU/g.

The dredging of sediments from the Santos Channel is necessary to allow the navigation of ships operating in the Port of Santos. The disposal sites for such sediments are situated on the coastal zone, in front of the Santos Bay. The present paper aimed at evaluating the toxicity of sediments collected at the Santos Channel and at the former and current sediment disposal sites. Whole sediment tests with amphipods and elutriate assays with sea-urchin embryos were used. The samples from the Santos Channel were considered the most toxic: all the sediment samples from this area showed toxicity. Moreover, some samples from both former and new sediment disposal sites exhibited toxicity. Therefore, results showed that sediments from the studied areas present evidences of degradation; however, further studies are required to determine relationships between toxicity and contamination. Results also suggested that the disposal of dredged sediments should be re-evaluated.

ABSTRACT Survival of a nalidixic acid-resistant strain of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium mr-DT-104 in water and sediments was tested using artificially contaminated aquaria. Water samples remained culture positive for salmonella for up to 54 days. Sediment samples were culture positive up to 119 days. In addition, potential mechanisms for spreading salmonella in the environments by chironomid larvae and adults were tested. We evaluated the acquisition of mr-DT-104 by chironomids from contaminated aquatic sediments and subsequent spread to uncontaminated sediments. Larval chironomids raised in contaminated sediments became culture positive, and the bacteria were carried over to adults after emergence. Contamination of clean sediments by chironomid larvae was not demonstrated. These findings clearly suggest that mr-DT-104 serovar organisms can survive in aquatic sediments for at least several months. Uptake of salmonellae by chironomid larvae and adults suggests that they are possible vectors of mr-DT-104 in both aquatic and terrestrial environments, although the role of larval defecation in movement of bacteria to new sediments was not demonstrated.

Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the potential for using toxicity assays with sediment samples for the detection of water pollution caused by the discharge of tannery effluents into water bodies and its application to environmental forensic investigation. The study included ecotoxicological evaluation of sediments, survey of benthic organisms in the field, as well as chromium, cadmium and lead dosage which provided data for a sediment quality triad evaluation. The sediment samples showed acute and chronic toxicity to the bioindicators, low biodiversity of benthic macrofauna and high chromium concentration, reaching up to 4365 mg.Kg–1. A close relationship was observed between the separate results of ecotoxicological sediment evaluation and the sediment quality triad. The sediment ecotoxicological assessment proved to be applicable to tracking sources of contamination related to tanneries and similar activities in environmental forensics.
